The persecution of Christians in India is not a new phenomenon. Violence against Christians has escalated over recent years under the Modi Government. The most recent one is the ongoing months-long orchestrated and synchronized persecution of Kuki Christians in Manipur by the majority Hindu Meitei tribe, wreaking havoc and killing many in the State. Around 300 churches were burned down, and 6,000 houses were burned and destroyed. Thousands are sheltered in different camps. Many people are still struggling to find food and shelter and facing threats. The gruesome violence against Christians is suspected beyond doubt to be supported by both the Hindu-led State and Central Governments. A total internet blackout ordered by the Government in these regions prevented the world from witnessing the most heinous crimes that took place in Manipur in the last few months. Recently, a leaked video of Christian Kuki women paraded naked in the streets and raped by mobs gave us a glimpse of what is happening inside Manipur.
Our Team’s Report
Last week, our team that visited these regions saw many villages and churches razed to the ground.
According to our agent’s report, there are still many unreported rapes and murders kept hidden out of fear. It’s an absolute gruesome situation for the Christians here. There is nothing more inhumane than the denial of proper burial for the dead of the Kuki community. As per the report, there are around 38 bodies waiting for permission for burial.
Our team member visited one of the refugee camps with emergency supplies. Young children remain traumatized by the events they witnessed on their way of escape to the camp. The people in this camp, mostly women and children, are in a state of shock, pain, and fear. Some lost their loved ones, and many others are still waiting to hear back from those who have been missing for weeks.
We were able to provide food and medical supplies that could last for another week or two.
One side of the wall inside the shelter was filled with memorial pictures of their loved ones who died in the persecution within the last 3 months.
Next week, our team plans to visit another camp further up in the hills. Access to this location is difficult and dangerous. We have a huge task in front of us, and hence, we urge you to pray for our mission’s safety and access to these regions and for our Christian brothers and sisters in Manipur.
God Bless,
