The Spiritual Need in Costa Rica

With the Pacific Ocean on its west coast and the Caribbean Sea on its east coast, Costa Rica is known for its tropical climate, jungles and rainforests, and ecotourism. The country is also bordered by Panama and Nicaragua but boasts greater economic stability and human development than neighbors in the region, making it a desirable safe haven for refugees from Nicaragua, Colombia, and other nearby countries at various times over the past 50 years.

Costa Rica has a population just over five million people. Roman Catholicism is the official state religion, but a survey by the University of Costa Rica in 2018 showed that 52% of the population identify as Catholic and 22% as Protestant. The country’s constitution guarantees religious freedom and has seen a small but growing Buddhist population due to the continuous immigration of people from Asia, the Middle East, and elsewhere in the 10/40 Window.

ABWE began working in Costa Rica in 1999 with the belief that God is not only working in the country itself but can also use Costa Rica as a launching pad for a broader missions movement—impacting Central American nations and beyond with the gospel.

We seek team members who are passionate about building relationships, sharing the gospel, making disciples, and teaching the Bible to join us in Costa Rica. Experience in accounting, business, healthcare, construction, administration, youth ministry or music can be used in our ministry efforts. In addition, Costa Rica provides opportunities to share theological and ministerial training tools and resources as a means of helping to grow future church leaders and missionaries.
