Germany
The Spiritual Need in Germany
All the way from the Reformation to today, Germany has massive influence over Europe. It is geographically located in the center of the continent and has by far the largest population of its nine neighbors and 11 indirect neighbors.
Yet of the nearly 86 million people who live in the country, just two percent are evangelical believers, and the Christian church is rapidly declining. In fact, 65% of Germans maintain traditional Catholic or Protestant church membership, but attendance is normally limited to Christmas, Easter, or important social events such as weddings and funerals. As throughout the West, postmodernism and secularism are the predominant worldviews. National churches and believers in Germany are expressing heartache over the deteriorating spiritual state of their culture.
Germany also leads Europe in the number of refugees it has received—more than one million at the end of 2018. According to a UN report, more than half of these refugees have come from Syria, while others are from Iraq and Afghanistan. This gives the church a strategic opportunity to minister to the unreached, particularly Muslims, in a country more accessible to Westerners.
Christian Missions To Germany
ABWE’s goal in Germany is to establish churches which will become fully operated by German believers as they are equipped through evangelism, discipleship, and leadership training.
ABWE missions in Germany are diversified throughout the country. Our team’s sight is set on cities and areas where there is little-to-no gospel presence and where there are virtually no evangelical churches. With help from national partners, ABWE missions teammates work in existing churches, and have the vision to plant new churches. We receive interns and short-term teams to serve in local churches, help lead summer camps, retreats, and youth and children’s ministries. The need for long-term workers is also great, and with a growing opportunity for refugee ministry in Germany, we believe that a wide variety of passions and skill sets will be used in advancing the kingdom. Will you join us?
