The Spiritual Need in Zambia

The beauty of the famed Victoria Falls and the history of missions going back to David Livingstone along the Zambezi River may obscure the pressing spiritual need in Zambia. Though officially a Christian nation, Zambians struggle with spiritual rootedness in African traditional religion, cult groups that have made inroads into the country, and prosperity gospel teachings that are prevalent across much of Africa. There is a great need for theologically sound pastors and church leaders to bring true understanding of the gospel and teach God’s word. Zambia is very open to missionaries who will partner with established churches to reach more people with the life-changing message of Christ.

Zambia is located in southern Africa, and according to the World Bank Group it “ranks among the countries with the highest levels of poverty and inequality globally. 58% of Zambia’s 16.6 million people earn less than the international poverty line of $1.90 per day (compared to 41% across Sub-Saharan Africa) and three-quarters of the poor live in rural areas.” This represents not only great material need but also great opportunities to show the love of God in action.

ABWE in Zambia

ABWE opened work in Zambia through partnership with Gospelink and Ambassador International University, and the Chifundo Rural Health Center that is located on the university’s beautiful campus outside of Chongwe, Zambia. The university’s four academic programs are each accredited by the Higher Education Authority of Zambia, and all share an emphasis in Theology. The school’s motto is to “train Africa’s next generation of spiritual leaders.”

The Chifundo Rural Health Clinic was started with the understanding that caring for the sick is a powerful way to bear witness to Christ, who is the source of all healing. The clinic staff treats thousands of patients per month, most of which are from rural or impoverished communities and cannot afford quality medical care. Some patients come from many miles away. When the patients arrive, they receive excellent medical care, the gospel is shared with each one, and many have come to faith in Christ.

If you are a healthcare provider—or if you are simply interested in making disciples through any means possible—serving in Zambia is a great opportunity to meet both physical and spiritual needs and use the gifts God has given you. Is God leading you to share his love through missions in Zambia?
