The Spiritual Need in Paraguay
Paraguay is a country the size of California with a population of more than 6.5 million. The capital city, Asuncion, has the most dense population with close to two million people. Children have the opportunity here to attend Christian Schools in Spanish or English. San Lorenzo is the second largest city with over 270,000 residents and is also a focal point for ABWE Canada missionaries.
People in Paraguay are deeply rooted in their culture and Catholicism, but they are gracious when presented with the gospel. This approachability is an advantage to building relationships and winning them to Christ.
Several churches have been established in the capital city and surrounding areas, but still more are needed. With a large percentage of the population under 30, the potential for youth and children’s work is tremendous. The younger people here are longing for spiritual instruction and role models to emulate. Many are dissatisfied with the corruption they see in their government. Camp Cavaju is an established program that helps reach this group. On the same property is the Baptist Pastors Training Center, which is geared to training interior national workers for full-time ministry. Many people have also trusted Christ through the Bible Correspondence School, and some converts are now members of ABWE Canada churches and have entered the ministry.
ABWE Canada in Paraguay
ABWE Canada entered Paraguay in 1974. Today, we long for new missionaries to join our team and help us expand our work. We need church planters, teachers and individuals gifted in leadership training.
Those who enjoy working with children can invest their talent in developing campus ministries and Bible classes in elementary and high schools. Those gifted in training new leaders can pour their talents into the Baptist Pastors Training Center at our camp in Tobati, a two-hour drive from the capital of Asuncion. We also need teachers for the Centro Bautista Pastoral.
Paraguayans are fanatical about their soccer teams, which opens up another avenue for missionary work. We would like to grow our sports ministry to include soccer, volleyball and basketball teams. We hold evangelistic soccer tournaments twice a year at Camp. We are making this our operation base for the future.
Paraguay needs Christ’s hope and trained spiritual leaders to effectively share the gospel. Will you prayerfully consider joining us so we can reach more Paraguayans for Christ?
